To provide rotational
freedom in three axes, a spherical bearing is often considered. The
spherical air bearing shown at right is approximately 10 inches in diameter and
has been disassembled to reveal the working bearing surfaces. Spherical
bearings can often be combined with linear air bearings within the same
component to provide a sliding ball-joint-type support. This bearing can
support vertical and side loads while providing its rotational motion. When combined with
a cylindrical bearing, the hybrid can function as a rotating spindle; a popular
design due to ease of manufacture. Images
